Abstract: The present study aims to confirm the presence in Italy, particularly in Sicily, of two interesting species belonging to the genus Morchella Dill. ex Pers., one predominantly found in autumn, Morchella galilaea Masaphy & Clowez, and another one which occasionally appears during this season, M. rufobrunnea Guzmán & F. Tapia. For the former, appropriate macroscopic and microscopic descriptions, growth environments, and results of ITS, RPB1 and RPB2 markers are provided. Regarding the latter species, since it was not possible to recover the exsiccata (due to the complete deterioration), the available images were illustrated, providing a description of the macroscopic morphology and the habitat, as well as the results of ITS marker molecular analyses.
The genus Morchella Dill. ex Pers. comprises species highly appreciated for their edibility and belongs to the family Morchellaceae (Pezizales, Ascomycota). Difficulties associated with limitations in delineating many species have led over time to taxonomic overlaps and erroneous determinations, resulting in confusion in the systematic context of this taxon. Until a few decades ago […]
