Abstract: Xylaria violaceorosea is described as a new species based on the combination of distinctive macroscopic and microscopic characters. It is a lignicolous Xylaria with stromata roughly recalling those of X. hypoxylon but with a purplish pink outer layer that yields olivaceous yellow pigments in 10% KOH and relatively large ascospores provided with gelatinous secondary appendages
