Diagnosis Characteristics that differentiate T. cumberlandense from other species in the Rufum clade are a yellow-cream to buff, highly rugose peridium that does not expose the gleba, spores with short coniform spines, and a pungent-savory brassicaceous or onion-like aroma. This species is also clearly differentiated from closely related species in ITS, tef1, and rpb2 phylogenies.
