Scutellinia pennsylvanica (Seaver) Denison, Mycologia, 51 (5): 619 (1959).

 

Basionym Melastiza pennsylvanica Seaver, N. Amer. Cup-fungi (Operc.): 104 (1928).

Diagnosis Apothecia scattered or sessile, scutellate, the margin slightly elevated and sparingly clothed with long hairs, reaching a diameter of 5-8 mm.; hymenium slightly concave, bight-red; hairs dark-brown, thick-walled, septate, reaching a length of more than 1 mm. And a diameter of 35-40 µ near the base, gradually contracted below and often forked at the base, tapering above into a bristle-like apex; asci cylindric or subcylindric above, reaching a length of 250 µ and a diameter of 20µ; spores 1-seriate, parallel with the ascus or diagonally disposed, at first smooth, sculpturing taking the form of distinct and regular reticulations, the ridge of the reticulations 1-2 µ depp and giving to the spore surface a very rough appearance; paraphyses about 2 µ in diameter below, rather strongly enlarged above.
