Diagnosis Differs macroscopically from most other Pachyphlodes species in having a black peridium. Microscopic features that differentiate this species from others include the red peridium with transmitted light that darkens to black with the addition of 3% KOH, the lack of a perispore, and spore spines that have acute tips. Pachyphlodes annagardnerae differs from the only similar species, P. melanoxantha, in having shorter, wider asci on average, and in its different geographic distribution and its DNA barcode sequence.
