Diagnosis Ptychothecia hypogaea, irregularia, convoluta, implicata, 8-30 mm in diam, maturitate e fusco castanea, plus minusve laevia. Gleba complexa, canalibus e loculis 0.5-3 mm Iatis et hymeniis tectis. Peridium 12-180 µm crassum. Excipulum ectale 40-75 µm crassum, cellulis globosis vel ellipsoideis, radiatum serialibus. Excipulum entale 40-120 µm crassum, hyphis intertextis, cellis inflatis. Asci cylindrici, hyalini, fragile, ± 300 × 25-33 µm. Paraphyses 4-6 µm in diam, septatae, hyalinae, apicibus clavatis et usque ad 5-8 (-10) µm inflatis, ascos per 70-100 µm excidentes. Sporae uniseriatae, globosoe vel ellipsoideae, maturitate ochraceae, 20-30 × 20-28 µm sine ornamentato; ornamentatum inordinatum, spinis aggregatis, flexuosis, diminutis, plerumque in muco inclusis.
