Basionym Helvella grandis Cumino, Mém. Acad. Imp. sci., litt. beaux-arts Turin, 8: 230 (1806).

Diagnosis Helvella grandis. n. H. pileo amplo 3, aut 4 lobato, quandoque 2 lobato violaceo, fusco pustulato, subtus albo, laevi, stipite albo, rariter sulcato, basi dilatato, vacuo. Tab. II.

Nascitur primo vere post pluvias in montibus sylvosis fagineis. Fungus magnus. Forma, dimensionibusque variis gaudet, ac pileus modo violaceus, alias cinnamomeus, quandoque stramineus, aut fuscus ; saepe ambitum inferiorem stipitis habet pilei dimensioni aequalem. Edulis, pretiosior Bol. Suillo ; aequiparatur Phallo esculento, ac ejus loco venundatur sub nomine vulgari Pungole.
