Diagnosis Apothecia orbicularia, sessilia, concava, demum subapplanata, margine integro, leniter elevato vel incurvo, hymenio fuligineo-fusco, extus tomentello ferrugineo-fusco, ascis cylindraceo-clavatis, sporidiis ellipticis, uni-vel biguttulatis, asperulis (20-23 × 4-5 µ) paraphysibus superne incrassatis, septatis.

Cups ½ to nearly 1 in. broad; rigid when dry , gelatinous and tough when moist. Very nearly allied to Rhizina thwaitesii, B., but the sporidia do not approach fusiform, and the exterior is not clad with the black hairs of that species.
