Abstract: A new species of hypogeous fungus, Pachyphlodes cantabrica, found with the aid of trained dogs in a Fagus sylvatica forest at the Saja-Besaya Reserve (Cantabria, Spain), is here formally introduced and described. Phylogenetic studies based on concatenated ribosomal sequences (ITS and 28S rDNA) confirmed that it belongs to genus Pachyphlodes, and suggest it is sister to P. conglomerata.
The genus Pachyphlodes was established by Zobel (1854) around the type Pachyphlodes ligericus (currently corrected to P. ligerica). For many years, the species belonging to this genus were referred to under the illegitimate name Pachyphloeus Tul. & C. Tul. 1845 (non Pachyphloeus Göpp. 1836, Pteridophyta), which had been established a few years earlier by the Tulasne brothers (Tulasne & Tulasne, 1845) around the type Pachyphloeus melanoxanthus Tul. & C.
