Abstract: The genus Ionopezia is well characterised by its fusoid, guttulate ascospores, ornamented by thin longitudinal striae. Since molecular data became available, we have discovered that this genus was more diverse than expected. Ionopezia gerardii, type of this genus, is now considered as a species complex. In this context, Peziza ionella Quél. was previously reinstated and we propose herein its epitypification based on material collected in the same area in France where it was discovered. We also introduce a new species, characterised by its small ascospores compared to other known collections identified under the epithet gerardii.
The genus Ionopezia was published by Van Vooren (2020) to accommodate a monophyletic group of species belonging to the Marcelleina–Peziza gerardii lineage of Pezizaceae as proposed by Hansen et al.
