Abstract: Based on molecular and morphological study of hypogeous collections of Geopora coming from different parts of Europe, a new treatment of this genus is proposed. The reinstatement of G. schackii, with the designation of a reference collection, is proposed and six new species are introduced, namely G. cylindrospora, G. crispa, G. megaspora, G. pubescens, G. skottyana and G. victoris. Details on the morphology of these species, phenology and ecology of each species are given, as well as detailed illustrations. A key to European hypogeous species of Geopora is proposed.
The genus Geopora was introduced by Harkness (1885), with G. cooperi as type, to accommodate this new North American hypogeous species characterised by the following features: woolly external surface, convolute hymenium, cylindrical asci, and hyaline smooth ascospores.
